Ringfort (Rath), Kilquain, Co. Galway

In a level field near Kilquain in County Galway, the outline of an early medieval settlement survives as little more than a low earthen edge in the grass.

What was once a rath, a ringfort of the kind that once numbered in the tens of thousands across Ireland and served as the enclosed farmstead of a single family or small community, has been worn down to a scarp barely 0.7 to 0.8 metres high. The surrounding bank that originally defined the circle has been almost entirely levelled, with only a fragment remaining on the western side.

When McCaffrey catalogued this site in 1952, it registered as a circular earthen fort roughly 39 metres in diameter. By the time of later survey work, the dimensions had settled to something slightly smaller and no longer quite circular, running 33 metres north to south and 31 metres east to west, the subtle distortion suggesting centuries of agricultural pressure. The original bank would have enclosed a domestic space, likely with a timber house and outbuildings, the whole thing surrounded by the raised earthwork as a boundary marking status and territory as much as providing physical defence. That most of it has been ploughed or grazed away is not unusual; the majority of Ireland's ringforts survive only partially, slowly absorbed into the farmland they once organised.

The outline of this one remains legible in aerial photography, the slight change in ground level casting enough shadow to trace the shape of the enclosure from above even when it is nearly invisible at ground level.
