Somebody, at some unknown point in the agricultural past, chose to work around the earthwork rather than through it, and that act of avoidance is part of why the site survives at all.

A rath is the commonest monument type in the Irish landscape, a circular enclosure defined by an earthen bank and ditch, used as a farmstead and defended residence during the early medieval period, roughly the fifth to twelfth centuries. This particular example sits on a gentle west-facing slope in undulating pasture and measures twenty-six metres across. Its enclosing bank is broad, around seven metres wide, though partially levelled over time, rising only about fifteen centimetres above the interior ground level and eighty centimetres above the exterior. Outside the bank runs a shallow fosse, the ditch that would originally have reinforced the sense of enclosure, now reduced to roughly twenty-six centimetres in depth and six metres across. The dimensions are modest but legible, and the basic grammar of the site, a raised platform ringed by bank and fosse, is still readable in the ground.

The site has not escaped entirely unscathed. There are small areas of quarrying visible in the southern and south-eastern sections of the bank, and material has been dumped into the fosse at the north. These are the ordinary injuries of farming land, and they sit alongside the older, stranger courtesy of that curving field boundary, which suggests the earthwork has been both used and quietly respected across successive generations.
