Ringfort (Rath), Knockaunbrack, Co. Galway

On the south-facing slope of Checker Hill in County Galway, a roughly circular enclosure sits quietly in grassland, its double banks and intervening ditch still legible after more than a thousand years.

What makes this ringfort, or rath, worth attention is not just its survival but the clarity of its engineering. A rath is a type of enclosed farmstead, typically dating from the early medieval period, in which earthen banks, sometimes reinforced with stone, defined a protected domestic space. Here, two such banks survive, the inner one stone-lined and tracing an arc from north through east to south, and the outer one stone-revetted along much of its circuit. Between them runs a fosse, the sunken ditch that would have added both a physical and a psychological barrier to entry.

The enclosure measures roughly 28 metres north to south and 26 metres east to west, making it a moderately sized example of its type. Where the inner bank breaks down, a natural or modified scarp takes over as the enclosing element, though the southern portion shows signs of quarrying that has disturbed that section. A gap at the northern side is thought to be the original entrance, which is a detail worth pausing over: the deliberate positioning of an entrance relative to approach routes, sight lines, and prevailing winds was rarely accidental in these structures. The site was noted by Neary as early as 1914, catalogued as number seven in a local survey, which places it among the longer-documented examples of its kind in the region.
