Ringfort (Rath), Knockmanagh, Co. Cork

What makes this earthwork at Knockmanagh quietly compelling is not the ringfort itself, common enough across the Irish landscape, but what surrounds it.

Two standing stones occupy nearby fields, one roughly 140 metres to the north-west, another about 120 metres to the east-north-east. The fort sits between them on an east-west ridge, and whether that proximity is coincidence or something older and more deliberate is a question the ground does not readily answer.

A rath, to use the Irish term, is a ringfort formed from earthen banks rather than stone, typically dating from the early medieval period and used as a defended farmstead enclosure. This one is a substantial example. The circular interior measures nearly 45 metres across in both directions, enclosed by two concentric earthen banks with a fosse, or ditch, running between them, and a further external fosse beyond the outer bank. The inner bank still stands to an internal height of three metres, the outer to just over two. The east-facing entrance is four metres wide, oriented to catch the morning light and, perhaps, to face the lower of the two standing stones. The interior is largely grassed over, with a patch of briars spreading across the northern half, which is typical of ringforts that have been left undisturbed in permanent pasture for generations. The standing stones themselves predate the rath by a considerable margin, likely belonging to the Bronze Age, meaning this ridge was a place of some significance across several distinct periods of human activity in North Cork.
