Known in Irish as a ráth, a ringfort is an enclosed farmstead of the early medieval period, typically circular and defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches. Thousands of them are scattered across Ireland, yet each one marks a specific family or community that once made a life within those banks, kept livestock, stored grain, and looked out over territory they considered their own.

Ringforts were built and occupied primarily between the fifth and twelfth centuries, though many were already ancient features in the landscape by the time of the Norman arrival. The ráth type, defined by its earthwork rather than stone construction, was the most common form. In Connacht generally, and Mayo in particular, these enclosures survived in considerable numbers, partly because the land was never as intensively reorganised as in parts of Leinster or Ulster.
