Ringfort (Rath), Lackabeha, Co. Cork

A site can be more eloquent in its absence than in its survival.

At Lackabeha in County Cork, a ringfort that once occupied a west-facing slope has been levelled so thoroughly that almost nothing remains above ground. What makes it quietly compelling is precisely this erasure, and the small details that survived it almost by accident.

On the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1842, the enclosure appears clearly, labelled 'Lissawoanbra', and drawn as a roughly oval shape measuring approximately 25 metres north to south and 15 metres east to west. A ringfort, in basic terms, is a circular or oval enclosure defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, used as a farmstead and settlement during the early medieval period in Ireland. Thousands survive across the country in varying states of preservation, but this one did not fare well. By the time modern surveyors reached it, the earthworks had been levelled and no surface trace remained. One clue persists: an earthen, stone-faced trackway to the east of the site may incorporate material from the original bank, redistributed rather than removed. The site is also associated with a souterrain, an underground stone-lined passage or chamber that typically served early medieval settlements as storage space or as a place of refuge. The souterrain is recorded separately, suggesting that at least part of the underground infrastructure outlasted the destruction of what stood above it.
