A ringfort once stood here in the tillage fields of north Cork, roughly fifty metres from the eastern bank of the Awbeg River, but it was levelled long ago and has left no visible trace on the ground. The site survives only as a ghost, legible not to the eye of a walker but to the camera of an aircraft, appearing in aerial photographs as a cropmark, the buried circular ditch causing the crops above it to grow in subtly different ways and so betraying the outline of something that ploughs and time have otherwise erased.

A ringfort, sometimes called a rath, was a roughly circular enclosure defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, used throughout early medieval Ireland as a defended farmstead. This particular example was bivallate, meaning it had two concentric banks, which tends to suggest a settlement of some status. It measured approximately twenty-five metres in diameter, and was recorded as a hachured circular enclosure on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1842, which means it was still sufficiently visible in the mid-nineteenth century to be mapped with care. By the time aerial survey picked it up as a cropmark in 1973, the earthworks had gone entirely, and the photograph revealed not only the circular fosse, the ditch that once ran around the enclosure, but the remnant of a landway on the eastern side that had cut across and truncated the ring. The site sits about eighty metres south-east of a river crossing known as the Chieftain's Ford, a name that does its own quiet work in suggesting the kind of landscape this once was, a routeway, a river, a defended settlement close enough to the crossing to matter.
