Ringfort (Rath), Lackanalooha By.), Co. Cork

In a pasture field on a south-south-west-facing slope in West Cork, a near-perfect circle of raised earth sits quietly in the grass, its proportions remarkably intact.

This is a rath, the most common type of ringfort found across Ireland, a form of enclosed farmstead built predominantly during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. Thousands survive in varying states of preservation, but what makes any individual example worth pausing over is the accumulation of detail: the dimensions, the orientation, the way the entrance faces, the depth of the surrounding ditch.

The earthen bank enclosing this site measures roughly thirty metres across in both directions, making it a fairly typical example in terms of scale. The bank itself stands to about one and a half metres in height, and around most of the circuit it is accompanied by an external fosse, which is simply a ditch, here running from the north-north-west to the south-south-west and cut to a depth of around one and a half metres. Fosses like this served a practical dual purpose: the excavated material went into building up the bank, and the ditch itself added an extra layer of deterrence to livestock or unwanted visitors. The entrance, at six metres wide and positioned to the south-east, is accompanied by a causeway crossing the fosse, a feature that gives some sense of how people and animals would have moved in and out of the enclosure in daily life. South-easterly entrances are among the more commonly recorded orientations for Irish ringforts, though the reasons for this preference, whether practical, cultural, or connected to light and aspect, remain a matter of discussion among archaeologists.
