Ringfort (Rath), Liscasey, Co. Clare

Between forty and fifty thousand ringforts are thought to survive across Ireland, yet individually most of them go almost entirely unremarked.

The one at Liscasey, in County Clare, is typical of that quiet anonymity. A rath, as these enclosures are also known, is essentially a roughly circular earthwork, built up from a bank and ditch, that once enclosed a farmstead during the early medieval period, broadly from around the fifth to the twelfth century. They were the homes of farmers and minor landowners, not warriors or kings, and the ordinariness of that origin is perhaps why they so rarely attract attention.

Liscasey itself is a small rural townland in the barony of Clonderalaw, in the west of the county, not far from the Shannon estuary. Clare has a particularly dense concentration of these earthworks, a reflection of how intensively the land was farmed and divided in the early Christian period. A rath at Liscasey would have sat within that broader pattern, one household among many scattered across a landscape that was, by the standards of the time, well settled and productive. The earthen banks that defined such enclosures often survive for centuries simply because later generations found it easier to farm around them than to level them, which is one reason so many endure in the Irish countryside today.

Beyond its classification and location, specific details about this particular site remain sparse for now. What is known is that it exists, that it has been formally recorded as a monument, and that it occupies a patch of Clare countryside carrying more than a thousand years of continuous human association.
