Ringfort (Rath), Lisnamuck, Co. Tipperary

A large mature beech tree grows from the centre of this early medieval enclosure near Lisnamuck in County Tipperary, its roots threading through ground that cattle have churned and pocked for generations.

That combination of the ancient and the incidental is part of what makes the site quietly absorbing: a structure built to organise and protect early Irish farming life, now itself organised around the rhythms of grazing animals.

The ringfort, known in Irish as a rath, is a roughly D-shaped earthwork measuring 36 metres north to south and 42 metres east to west, sitting just below the crest of a south-facing slope in undulating pasture. Ringforts of this type were typically the enclosed homesteads of farming families during the early medieval period, roughly the fifth to twelfth centuries, their surrounding banks and ditches providing a degree of security for people and livestock alike. Here, the enclosing bank survives to an external height of 1.4 metres, dropping in scale as it runs downslope through the southern section. The northern side of the fort appears to have been straightened at some point, absorbed into the line of a modern field boundary, and is now heavily overgrown with scrub and nettles. Stones are visible in the bank through the south-east quadrant, hinting at some degree of structural reinforcement. A shallow depression in the south, only around ten centimetres deep but three to four metres wide, may represent the remnant of an outer fosse, the defensive ditch that would originally have run around the exterior, though it has largely disappeared on the other three sides. A gap of 3.6 metres in the southern bank, currently used by cattle moving in and out of the field, may well preserve the line of the original entrance.
