Ringfort (Rath), Milltown, Co. Cork

A field in pasture on a gentle south-south-east-facing slope in north Cork conceals a structure that has been quietly subsiding into the landscape for well over a thousand years.

What looks at first glance like an uneven rise in the ground is in fact a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, a type of enclosed farmstead typical of the early medieval period, roughly 500 to 1000 AD. Thousands of these circular enclosures survive across Ireland, yet each one rewards close attention, and this particular example has some intriguing details that repay a careful look.

The enclosure itself is nearly circular, measuring 32.6 metres north to south and 32.3 metres east to west. It is defined by a worn earthen bank, which drops about 1.05 metres to the base of a fosse, the term for the ditch that typically accompanied such a bank and provided the material to build it. A scarp, essentially a natural or shaped slope, takes over around much of the circuit where the bank has eroded away. An outer bank, surviving to about 1.1 metres in height, runs from the north-west around to the east, separated from the inner bank by its own intervening fosse, with a further external fosse, roughly 0.8 metres deep, visible to the north. This double-bank arrangement would have made the enclosure more formidable, likely reflecting the status of whoever once farmed and lived within it. One section of the outer bank, still visible on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map surveyed in 1905, has since disappeared entirely from the ground surface, a reminder of how quickly earthworks can be lost. Inside, the southern portion of the interior has been deliberately raised to level off the floor against the natural hillslope. To the north-east, a small triangular area defined by low earthen banks, roughly 18 metres by 19 metres, sits just outside the fort proper and may once have served as an annexe or enclosure associated with the main structure, perhaps for livestock or storage.
