Ringfort (Rath), Monaparson, Co. Cork

There is a field in Monaparson, County Cork, on a south-east-facing slope, where nothing whatsoever remains to be seen.

No earthwork, no raised ground, no suggestion of what once stood there. And yet, for anyone who knows where to look in the cartographic record, the spot is anything but unremarkable.

The Ordnance Survey's six-inch map of 1842 recorded a bi-vallate ringfort at this location, shown with the hachured lines that surveyors used to indicate an enclosure defined by banks and ditches. Bi-vallate means the site had two concentric rings of earthworks rather than one, a form associated with higher-status settlements in early medieval Ireland. Ringforts, or raths, were typically the enclosed farmsteads of farming families during the period roughly spanning the fifth to the twelfth centuries, and a double-ringed example would have represented something a step above the ordinary. This one measured approximately twenty-five metres in diameter. At some point after the Victorian surveyors captured its outline on paper, the site was levelled entirely, most probably as pasture was extended or improved, and the earthworks were reduced to nothing. The land now gives no indication, to the eye, that anything archaeological ever occupied it.

What makes Monaparson quietly interesting is not what survives but what the 1842 map preserves. The Ordnance Survey's first large-scale mapping of Ireland caught thousands of monuments at a moment before agricultural improvement erased them, and that archive now functions as a kind of fossil record of the landscape. The ringfort here exists only as an ink mark on a nineteenth-century sheet, a double circle noted by a surveyor who almost certainly gave it no particular thought, and who could not have known it would become the sole evidence of an early medieval enclosure that has otherwise vanished completely from the ground.
