This is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, a type of enclosed settlement that was once among the most common features of the early medieval Irish countryside. Thousands were built across the island, typically between the sixth and tenth centuries, serving as farmsteads for families of middling status. What makes each one individual is the detail of its construction and the particular compromises its builders made with the ground beneath them.

This example measures roughly 31 metres north to south and 35 metres east to west, giving it a slightly oval footprint. The earthen bank that defines the enclosure stands 1.7 metres high, and its builders raised the western and southern sections deliberately higher to counteract the natural lean of the hillside, keeping the enclosed area level and usable. On the north-east side, the outer face of the bank is stone-faced, a detail that suggests either a local abundance of suitable material or a particular concern for stability on that exposed flank. Running from the south around to the west is an external fosse, a defensive ditch, cut to a depth of 0.7 metres, adding a further layer of separation between the interior and the surrounding land. Over time, the eastern side has been disturbed by the construction of a laneway and field boundaries, and a gap has been worn through the western bank by cattle moving across it, the kind of gradual, mundane alteration that reshapes ancient monuments more thoroughly than any single act of demolition.
