Ringfort (Rath), Raffeen, Co. Cork

There is nothing left to see at Raffeen, and that is precisely what makes it worth knowing about.

A ringfort that once occupied a north-facing slope in County Cork has been entirely removed by quarrying, leaving no visible surface trace. Where an earthwork of roughly forty metres in diameter once stood, enclosed by a double fence some six feet high and thick with thorn hedging, there is now only ground.

When O'Leary wrote about the site in 1919, it was already bisected by a stone field fence running east to west, a division that appears on every edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch maps as well. Even then, the enclosure had the look of something slowly being absorbed into the working landscape. O'Leary noted two hollows on the west side of the lios, the Irish word for the enclosed space within a ringfort, and interpreted these as evidence of souterrains beneath. Souterrains are underground stone-lined passages or chambers commonly associated with early medieval ringforts in Ireland, used variously for storage, refuge, or both. Whether those underground features survive beneath the quarried ground is unknown. Ringforts of this type were typically built and occupied between roughly the sixth and tenth centuries, serving as farmsteads for a single family or kin group, enclosed for the protection of livestock as much as people.

The Raffeen ringfort is, in a practical sense, gone. Its interest now lies almost entirely in that gap between what was documented and what remains, a common enough fate for sites that sat in agriculturally or industrially useful ground, and a reminder of how much the Irish early medieval landscape has been quietly dismantled over the past two centuries.
