Ringfort (Rath), Raheen, Co. Westmeath

On the summit of a high ridge in County Westmeath, a large earthwork sits quietly in pasture, its concentric rings of bank and ditch still readable in the landscape after more than a thousand years.

What makes this rath particularly legible is the survival of multiple defensive layers: an inner bank of earth and stone, a well-defined fosse (a defensive ditch dug to slow approach and channel movement), a counterscarp embankment on the far side of that ditch, and the remains of an outer bank beyond. That outermost bank has since been absorbed into practical use as a townland boundary, which is itself a kind of quiet historical irony, an ancient perimeter repurposed to mark the administrative edges of a modern parish.

The monument was formally described in 1971 and again in 1976, by which point its structure was already well enough preserved to record in some detail. The entrance to the enclosure, a gap with a corresponding causeway, sits at the south-east, which is typical of early medieval ringforts across Ireland, where entrances frequently face east or south-east. Ringforts, known as raths when they are earthen rather than stone-built, were the dominant settlement form in early medieval Ireland, serving as enclosed farmsteads for families of some local standing. The interior here is uneven, with a north-facing slope and natural rises in the ground. In the eastern quadrant, the traces of a house site are visible; to the west and north, irregular depressions of uncertain purpose suggest further activity whose nature has not been determined. Aerial photographs taken in July 1966 and July 1970 captured the outline of the monument clearly from above, which is often when earthworks of this kind reveal themselves most honestly, the low sun throwing their geometry into relief against the grass.
