Ringfort (Rath), Rathdrum, Co. Cork

Something about this ringfort in Rathdrum, Co. Cork rewards a second look.

Its outer bank, which runs broad-based from the east-northeast around to the south, has been absorbed so thoroughly into the working landscape that it now doubles as both a field fence and a parish boundary, the ancient earthwork quietly performing administrative duties it was never built for. That kind of quiet persistence is not unusual for Irish ringforts, but it is rarely quite so legible on the ground.

Ringforts, known in Irish as raths when they are earthen rather than stone, were the predominant form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically enclosing a farmstead and its associated buildings. This example sits on a level terrace cut into a north-facing slope, positioned so that it commands open views to the north and east, a placement that would have made practical sense for anyone keeping watch over livestock or approaching visitors. The fort is roughly circular, measuring 28 metres north to south and just over 28 metres east to west. An earthen inner bank rises to about 1.5 metres, stone-faced on its northern interior side, and is separated from the outer bank by a fosse, a defensive ditch running between the two. There is a gap in the banks to the east, most likely the original entrance. Inside, the ground slopes gently eastward and becomes waterlogged toward the north. A possible souterrain has been identified just inside the inner bank to the west. Souterrains are underground stone-lined passages or chambers, common finds within Irish ringforts, and thought to have served for storage, refuge, or both.

The interior is currently in pasture and clear of vegetation, which makes the earthworks relatively easy to read. The waterlogging to the north is worth noting for anyone approaching in wetter months, as that corner of the enclosed area would likely be soft underfoot even in a dry season.
