Ringfort (Rath), Rathfilode, Co. Cork

There is nothing to see at Rathfilode.

That, in a way, is precisely what makes it worth knowing about. Somewhere beneath a west-facing slope of tilled farmland in County Cork, a ringfort once stood, a roughly circular enclosure of earthen bank that would have enclosed a farmstead in early medieval Ireland, home to a family of some local standing. Today, not a trace of it breaks the surface. It has been levelled entirely, absorbed into the agricultural landscape around it, leaving only a name on the land and a record on paper to confirm it was ever there.
