Ringfort (Rath), Rathonoane, Co. Cork

Sitting on the front lawn of the Forest House demesne in Co. Cork, this ringfort occupies an unusually prominent and orderly position for a monument of its kind.

A rath is a type of enclosed settlement, typically of early medieval date, formed by one or more earthen banks thrown up around a circular interior, often serving as a farmstead or the residence of a local family of some standing. This one measures just over forty-one metres in diameter, its earthen bank still rising to two metres, with an external fosse, or ditch, cut to roughly the same depth. The entrance faces east. What makes the site quietly puzzling is the suggestion that its almost symmetrical appearance, and the way it sits within the designed landscape of the demesne, may point to some degree of alteration or deliberate shaping as a landscape feature rather than simple survival in its original form.

The fort does not appear on the first edition Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1842, which is itself an odd absence for a monument of this scale, and raises questions about whether it was obscured, misrecorded, or already absorbed into the demesne grounds by that point. By 1939, when P. J. Hartnett recorded the site, the interior had been planted with trees, and the eastern inner slope of the fosse had been reinforced with a modern stone wall, banked up to protect or perhaps tidy the feature. Those trees are now gone, and the interior has been cleared, though the ground within remains somewhat uneven, a reminder that the archaeology beneath the surface is unlikely to be entirely undisturbed.
