Ringfort (Rath), Rathsallagh, Co. Tipperary

A ring of thorns sitting in level Tipperary pasture, this rath is so thoroughly reclaimed by thorn trees that nobody has been able to get inside to measure it properly.

Its dimensions, a circle roughly 20 metres across in both directions, had to be estimated from an Ordnance Survey map rather than by direct measurement on the ground, because the interior growth is simply impenetrable. It is a small indignity that says something about how quietly these sites can slip out of human reach even while sitting in the middle of farmed land.

A rath is an early medieval ringfort, typically an enclosed farmstead of the first millennium, defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches thrown up around a homestead. This example is bivatllate, meaning it has two concentric circuits of bank and ditch. The inner bank still stands to an external height of 1.8 metres and is nearly 9.3 metres wide, though it has been worn down to a simple slope in some sections. Between the two banks runs a fosse, the drainage ditch that separated them, here roughly 8.8 metres wide and up to 0.6 metres deep. A field boundary running east to west cuts across the northern side, truncating both the fosse and the outer bank, which survives only on the arc from northeast around through east and south to northwest. The site is not entirely without life: a badger sett has been established in the outer face of the inner bank on the eastern side, which goes some way to explaining why the earthworks in that area may have suffered additional disturbance over the years. A second ringfort of the same type lies approximately 220 metres to the west, which is a reminder that these enclosures were rarely isolated features but part of a wider, densely settled early Irish landscape.
