Ringfort (Rath), Reanacaheragh, Co. Cork

On a south-facing slope at Reanacaheragh in County Cork, a ringfort once occupied a roughly forty-metre circle of ground.

A rath, as this type of enclosure is also known, is an early medieval farmstead typically defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, enclosing a family's dwelling and outbuildings. This one, however, no longer reads easily as what it once was. By the time the Ordnance Survey mapped it in 1842, it had already been bisected by a laneway running northeast to southwest, with a house and yard occupying its northeastern quadrant. The enclosure appeared on that map as a hachured circle, the cartographers' conventional way of showing an earthwork, but the monument itself was already compromised.

At some point between that 1842 survey and the present day, the rath was levelled, the banks pushed down and the ditches filled, most likely in the course of agricultural improvement. This was an extremely common fate for Irish ringforts across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, as farmers cleared obstacles to tillage and grazing. The site now lies in pasture, and what survives is subtle: faint undulations still visible in the southeastern quadrant, traces of the original circuit pressing up through the grass. The laneway and the building activity in the northeast have erased much of the rest, leaving only that quiet ripple in the ground as evidence of a structure that may once have been someone's home, enclosure, and small defended world.
