Ringfort (Rath), Rearour, Co. Cork

There is nothing left to see at Rearour, and that, in its own quiet way, is precisely what makes this site worth knowing about.

A ringfort once stood here, one of the thousands of roughly circular or oval earthwork enclosures built across Ireland during the early medieval period, typically between the fifth and twelfth centuries, and used as farmsteads by families of varying social rank. At Rearour, even that faint outline has been largely erased. Centuries of agricultural use, and more recently the movement of livestock across the ground, have done away with whatever banks or ditches once defined the site.

What survives is cartographic rather than physical. A 1943 Ordnance Survey six-inch map shows the site as a roughly rectangular field, approximately forty metres on its shorter axis and fifty on its longer, with rounded corners to the south and east, those softened angles being a typical feature of ringfort morphology. A roughly square adjacent field, around forty metres across, appears to have been absorbed into the western side of a farmyard, suggesting the site was gradually domesticated into the working landscape rather than cleared in any single act. Locally, the place was known as a lios, the Irish word for a ringfort or enclosed settlement, a term that often persisted in local memory long after the physical structure had disappeared.

For anyone passing through mid Cork with an interest in early medieval settlement, the interest here is less in what can be observed on the ground than in the pattern it represents. Ringforts are among the most common archaeological monument types in Ireland, yet a substantial proportion survive only as crop marks, map traces, or place-names. Rearour is a case study in how completely a site can be absorbed by the landscape that once surrounded it.
