Ringfort (Rath), Rossline, Co. Cork

There is nothing to see at Rossline.

That is, in a sense, precisely what makes it worth knowing about. Somewhere on a gently south-south-east-facing pasture slope in north Cork, a ringfort once stood, its circular earthen bank clearly legible on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1842 as a hachured ring. Today it has been levelled entirely, leaving no visible trace on the ground. The site belongs to a category that archaeologists sometimes call a negative presence, a place defined more by what has vanished than by what remains.

A rath, as ringforts of this type are generally known in Ireland, was a roughly circular enclosure bounded by one or more earthen banks and ditches, used during the early medieval period, broadly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, as a farmstead and place of enclosure for livestock. The Rossline example may be one of two such forts recorded by Bowman in 1934, both sitting on land then belonging to a Joseph Nunan. Bowman described them as single-ramparted enclosures, the larger measuring 39 yards across and the smaller 27 yards, modest dimensions well within the normal range for a rural rath. By the time any systematic archaeological inventory caught up with the site, even those dimensions had become a matter of historical record rather than measurable fact.

What the 1842 map preserves, then, is the last reliable image of something that had probably already been under pressure from agricultural improvement for some decades. The cartographers of the first Ordnance Survey recorded many such earthworks across Ireland with a consistency that now makes their maps an unintentional archive of a landscape since transformed. At Rossline, the map is the monument.
