Ringfort (Rath), Scarriff, Co. Cork

A field in Scarriff, County Cork, holds something that can no longer be seen.

Beneath what is now tillage ground on a south-facing slope, a ringfort once stood, and its disappearance from the surface is, in its own way, as telling as its original presence. Ringforts, known in Irish as raths or lioses, were the enclosed farmsteads of early medieval Ireland, typically consisting of a circular earthen bank and ditch surrounding a domestic space. Thousands survive across the country, but many more have been quietly erased by centuries of ploughing, and this site in West Cork is one of them.

The fort does appear on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1842, marked as a circular enclosure, which means it was still at least partially visible to the surveyors who crossed this ground in the early nineteenth century. By 1931, when the archaeologist Seán P. Ó Ríordáin visited, there was still enough remaining for him to record what he described as the remains of a single ramparted lios approximately twenty-nine yards in diameter. That observation, brief as it is, fixes a moment when the site existed somewhere between legible and lost. Since then, continued cultivation has removed whatever traces Ó Ríordáin saw, and today there is no visible surface evidence at all.

What lingers is the map record and that single note from 1931, enough to confirm the site existed but not enough to reconstruct it in any meaningful detail. For a visitor, there would be nothing to observe in the field itself. The interest here is less about presence than absence, about how a settlement that once organised the lives of an early medieval farming family can be reduced, over enough centuries of agricultural use, to an entry in an inventory and a faint ring on an old map.
