Ringfort (Rath), Scrahanard, Co. Cork

On a south-south-west-facing slope in rough grazing land near Scrahanard, a roughly circular earthwork sits quietly embedded in the hillside, its builders having gone to considerable trouble to make the ground behave.

Where the slope fell away, they cut into the hill on the northern side and used the spoil to build up the southern edge, effectively levelling the interior platform before enclosing it. The result is a ringfort, or rath, a type of enclosed farmstead that was the standard unit of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically dating from somewhere between the fifth and twelfth centuries.

The enclosure measures approximately 32 metres east to west and 30 metres north to south, making it a reasonably substantial example. What gives it a degree of interest beyond its size is the variety of materials and techniques used to define its boundary. The northern arc, running from north-north-west to east-north-east, is formed by an earthen bank that still stands around 1.5 metres high on the interior and 0.9 metres on the exterior. This bank is stone-faced in parts, suggesting at least some investment in permanence. From the east-north-east around to the south, the boundary shifts to dumped stone rather than a shaped bank, and from there to the west the enclosure is defined by a natural or engineered scarp standing about 1.3 metres high. The western arc back to the north-north-west relies on a stone field boundary, possibly reused from a later agricultural arrangement. A narrow gap just one metre wide in the southern section marks what was likely the original entrance. The patchwork of earthwork, dumped stone, scarp, and field boundary gives the site an improvised quality that reflects the practical constraints of working with a sloping landscape rather than any lack of ambition on the part of its builders.
