Ringfort (Rath), Scrarour, Co. Cork

Some of the most telling archaeological sites in Ireland are the ones you cannot see at all.

At Scrarour in north County Cork, a ringfort once occupied a roughly thirty-metre circle of ground, its earthen banks enclosing what was probably a farmstead of the early medieval period. Ringforts, known in Irish as raths, were typically the enclosed homesteads of farming families, their raised banks offering a degree of protection for people and livestock. Today, the site has been levelled completely, swallowed into arable tillage land without leaving any visible trace on the surface.

What we know comes largely from the Ordnance Survey's six-inch map of 1842, which recorded the enclosure using hachured lines, the cartographic convention for showing raised earthworks. At that point the site was apparently still legible in the landscape. More intriguing still, the map shows a smaller circular feature, roughly six metres across, sitting at the centre of the enclosure, possibly the footprint of a souterrain entrance, a storage pit, or some other internal structure. A lime kiln, used historically for burning limestone to produce agricultural lime, was also noted on the north-western bank, suggesting the site had already been partially repurposed for farming by the time the surveyors arrived. Roughly two hundred and fifty metres to the east runs the Claidh Dubh, a large linear earthwork that cuts through north Cork on a broadly north-south alignment and whose precise origins and purpose remain a matter of debate among archaeologists.

There is nothing left to stand beside at Scrarour, which is precisely what makes the documentary evidence worth pausing over. The 1842 map caught the site at a moment when it was still just about there, a ghost of a boundary fading into the field system around it.
