Ringfort (Rath), Seskin, Co. Kilkenny

At the crest of a hill above the Nore valley in County Kilkenny, a circular earthwork sits quietly in rolling grassland, its low bank and shallow ditch easy to overlook from a distance.

This is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, the kind of enclosed farmstead that once dotted the Irish countryside in enormous numbers during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. Tens of thousands were built across the island, yet each one occupies its landscape in a slightly different way, and the one at Seskin is no exception.

The earthwork here is modest but legible. The enclosed area measures around 28 metres in diameter, ringed by an earthen bank roughly four metres wide at its base and rising about 1.2 metres on the outer face. Beyond the bank lies an external fosse, the surrounding ditch that would have reinforced both the enclosure's defensive capacity and its social signal to anyone approaching across the hillside. That fosse is around five metres wide and over a metre deep. The interior is slightly dished, meaning it slopes gently downward toward the centre by about 0.4 metres, a feature that may reflect centuries of gradual soil movement or the original design of the ground within. A gap cut through the bank in the north-east quadrant likely represents a later interference rather than the original entrance, which in ringforts of this type was more often positioned to the south or east.

The site's position is quietly telling. The slope drops sharply to the east, toward the Nore valley below, while the ground rises more gradually and unevenly to the west. Whoever chose this place to build would have had a clear view over the valley, a combination of practical visibility and a claim to a prominent position in the landscape that would have been immediately understood by anyone working or travelling in the area below.
