There is nothing to see at Shanakill, and that, in its own way, is the point.
A field of pasture on a north-facing slope in County Cork sits above a place that was once a rath, a type of circular earthwork enclosure used in early medieval Ireland as a farmstead, typically defended by one or more earthen banks and ditches. No mound rises from the grass. No trace of a bank survives. The site has been levelled entirely, leaving a landscape that gives no indication it was ever anything other than ordinary farmland.
