The ringfort at Skarragh survives only as a slight scarp on the northern side of a gently sloping field, the earthwork itself long since levelled by centuries of agricultural use. A ringfort, or rath, was a roughly circular enclosure defined by an earthen bank and ditch, used during the early medieval period in Ireland as a farmstead and family enclosure. Here, little of that structure remains above ground, yet the site has not entirely disappeared from the record.

When the Ordnance Survey produced its six-inch map of the area in 1842, the enclosure was still legible enough to be marked as a hachured circle, approximately 35 metres in diameter. That cartographic snapshot is now one of the more reliable pieces of evidence for what was once here. By 1934, when a researcher named Bowman documented the area, the fort had already been levelled, and it appears in his notes alongside a companion site, a second ringfort on the same land, then belonging to a W. O'Callaghan. The two sites together hint at a small cluster of early medieval activity in this part of North Cork, the kind of quiet, localised pattern that tends to be overshadowed by more dramatic monuments elsewhere in the county.

For anyone curious enough to visit, there is little to see beyond that slight northern scarp, and even that requires some patience and a decent eye for subtle changes in ground level. The value of a site like this is less in what is visible and more in what it represents: a place where someone once lived, farmed, and enclosed their world within a modest earthen ring, now absorbed almost entirely back into the landscape.
