Ringfort (Rath), Tullacondra, Co. Cork

What makes this particular enclosure in Tullacondra quietly unusual is the detail visible even in its weathered, overgrown state: two earthen banks, two fosses between them, and a separate inner fosse that hints at a third bank now gone, levelled at some unknown point and absorbed back into the surrounding pasture.

A rath is an earthen ringfort, a type of enclosed farmstead built predominantly during the early medieval period in Ireland, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. Thousands survive across the country in varying states of preservation, but this example in north Cork carries a particular complexity. The site measures approximately 29 metres north to south and 27 metres east to west, defined by concentric earthworks: an inner fosse surviving from the east-south-east to the north-east, with an internal depth of around a metre; a first bank standing to roughly 0.9 metres, broken and overgrown toward the south-east; an intervening fosse that becomes waterlogged along its northern and western stretches; and an outer bank reaching a maximum height of 1.2 metres, with a narrow gap of about a metre to the north-east. A flat-bottomed external fosse, surviving on the northern arc but obscured by vegetation toward the south, completes the layered arrangement. The possible former inner bank, if it existed, would have made this a triple-banked enclosure, a configuration generally associated in the archaeological literature with higher-status settlement. Immediately to the west, just outside the fort, lies a fulacht fiadh, a type of ancient cooking or industrial site typically identified by a horseshoe-shaped mound of burnt and fire-cracked stone beside a water source or former water source. The proximity of the two monuments is not unusual in the Irish landscape; they are often found in close association, though whether this reflects contemporaneous use or simply repeated occupation of a favoured slope is rarely easy to determine.
