Ringfort (Rath), Whitehall, Co. Tipperary

A small stream has been quietly reshaping this early medieval enclosure for longer than anyone can say, entering the fosse at its northern edge and keeping the surrounding ditch partly waterlogged to this day.

That detail alone marks this ringfort out from the tidier examples that tend to attract attention. Most raths, as these circular earthen enclosures are commonly known, were built as defended farmsteads during the early medieval period, typically between the sixth and tenth centuries. Their defining features are a raised internal bank and an outer ditch, or fosse, designed to keep livestock in and unwanted visitors out. Here, the interplay between the site and its local hydrology gives the place an almost semi-aquatic quality that would have been quite deliberate at the time of construction.

The rath at Whitehall sits on a very gradual south-easterly slope in pasture, its roughly circular interior measuring approximately 45 metres north-west to south-east and 48 metres north-east to south-west. The enclosing earthen bank is around six metres wide, rising about one metre on the interior side and nearly two and a half metres on the exterior, with a fosse roughly three and a half metres wide and one metre deep running around the outside. The original entrance was a causeway on the south-east side, nearly four metres wide, and that feature survives, though not entirely in its ancient form. At some point the landowner reinforced the causeway and installed a concrete cylindrical culvert beneath it, allowing the stream to pass through rather than pond against the approach. It is a practical intervention, and not an uncommon one on working farmland, but it does mean that a small piece of modern engineering now sits embedded in a structure that is over a thousand years old.
