Road – class 3 togher, Derryvella, Co. Tipperary

Buried beneath the surface of Derryvella Bog in County Tipperary lies what was once a road, built not from stone or gravel but from timber, laid carefully across waterlogged ground by people who needed to get somewhere.

What remains is a togher, the Irish term for a bog road or trackway, and this particular example is a relatively modest one, classified as class 3, meaning it was constructed from transversely laid roundwood and brushwood resting on longitudinal runners of the same material. The technique is straightforward in principle: lay poles across the soft ground perpendicular to the direction of travel, brace them underneath with lengthwise timbers, and you have a surface that spreads the weight of a person, an animal, or a loaded cart. In practice, building and maintaining such a structure across an active bog would have demanded both labour and local knowledge.

What makes this togher particularly interesting is its relationship to the landscape around it. It was orientated on a northeast to southwest axis, pointing directly towards a more substantial plank trackway located just ten metres to the north, one that crosses the full width of the bog. A second togher intersects this one on its southwestern side, running parallel to that same plank trackway. The arrangement suggests that this class 3 structure was not an end in itself but a feeder route, a connector intended to bring travellers or goods from the bog's edge onto the main crossing. The three elements together form a small network, which implies a degree of planning and perhaps continued use over time. By the time it was surveyed, the togher had been extensively milled, meaning peat-cutting machinery had cut through it repeatedly, leaving only two visible surface exposures across a pair of fields.
