Road – class 3 togher, Derryvella, Co. Tipperary

Just below the surface of a drained field on the eastern edge of Derryvella Bog in County Tipperary, the remains of an ancient road lie a little over five centimetres down, invisible to anyone walking overhead.

What survives is a togher, a type of timber trackway built across boggy ground to allow people and animals to pass safely. This particular example is classed as a class 3 togher, meaning it was constructed from brushwood rather than the heavier split planks or round timbers found in more substantial examples. The brushwood elements were laid longitudinally in a regular pattern, with a single parallel element running roughly 20 centimetres to the south-east, and the whole structure follows a north-west to south-east orientation.

The construction material, where it could be identified, included at least one piece of hazel, a wood commonly used in Irish bog trackways for its flexibility and availability. The togher was found in a poor state of preservation, its individual elements averaging around 35 centimetres in length and 30 centimetres in diameter, modest dimensions consistent with the lighter class of construction. Beneath it, the peat is of the poorly humified sphagnum type, interspersed with occasional eriophorum (cotton grass) and calluna (heather), suggesting the bog was relatively wet and open when the trackway was in use. Around 10 metres to the east, a single brushwood element and a wooden peg were spotted on the field surface, and these may belong to the same structure or a related feature, though the connection remains uncertain. Tогher sites like this one are scattered across Irish bogland and range in date from the Neolithic period through to the early medieval, making precise dating without dendrochronology or radiocarbon analysis difficult. What the Derryvella example represents, in modest and fragmentary form, is the routine practicality of past communities for whom crossing a bog was a problem requiring an engineered solution.
