Road – class 3 togher, Pallasboy, Co. Westmeath

Beneath the worked surface of Toar Bog in County Westmeath, a medieval road has been slowly giving itself up.

A togher, as these bog roads are known, is essentially a causeway of timber and brushwood laid across wet or unstable ground to make passage possible. This particular example was noticed not through careful excavation but through exposure, the machinery used in the industrial harvesting of peat having broken most of the timbers along their lengths before anyone recorded what lay there.

What survived, documented during a 2013 peatland reassessment, was a north-east to south-west oriented track of tightly packed transverse elements, roundwood and brushwood laid crossways in the manner typical of a class 3 togher. The pieces were small, up to a metre in length and ranging from a centimetre to eleven centimetres in diameter, and some still carried their bark, suggesting they had not been heavily processed before being pressed into service. In places the timbers lay one or two layers deep, set into what is described as moderately humified Sphagnum-rich pool peat, the kind of dense, wet, moss-derived material that preserves organic matter with remarkable fidelity. A fragment of birch from the structure was submitted for AMS radiocarbon dating, a technique that measures the decay of carbon isotopes to give a calendar age range. The result placed the togher's construction somewhere between 1411 and 1456, squarely in the later medieval period, when crossing bogland on foot or with animals or goods would have been a practical necessity rather than a curiosity.
