Beneath the fields of Ardscull in County Kildare, a medieval road has been lying largely unnoticed for centuries, its presence only recently confirmed by the scrutiny of aerial photography. What gives it away is not any visible mound or ditch at ground level, but a cropmark, the faint differential in how crops grow over buried features, which betrays the outline of parallel earthworks running roughly east to west for approximately 500 metres, spanning about 11 metres in width. That width is consistent with what historians and archaeologists recognise as a hollow-way, a road worn down into the earth through generations of repeated use by people, animals, and wheeled vehicles, gradually sinking below the level of the surrounding land.

The aerial photograph that made this visible was taken on 28 June 2018 via Google Earth, with a further faint trace confirmed on a Digital Globe image. The alignment of the earthworks points directly towards Ardscull Moat at the eastern end of the feature. A moated site, in the medieval Irish context, typically refers to a raised platform surrounded by a water-filled or wet ditch, used as a defended residence, often by a Norman or Anglo-Norman settler family. Ardscull Moat is a known monument in this part of Kildare, and the apparent convergence of the roadway upon it suggests the hollow-way once served as a formal approach route to that enclosure. To the north of the roadway, cropmarks also indicate the presence of a field system and a separate moated site, sketching out what may have been a more substantial medieval landscape of habitation, agriculture, and movement than the present-day fields would suggest.
