Road – road/trackway, Garraun, Co. Tipperary

Between a farm track and a faint crease in the landscape, a stretch of ancient roadway in the townland of Garraun, County Tipperary, survives mostly as an absence.

For roughly 600 metres through its central section, there is nothing to see at ground level; no worn surface, no visible ruts, no obvious corridor through the fields. What remains instead is a stone-faced field boundary running along its northern edge, and the fact that this same boundary doubles as a townland border between Garraun and Moorstown. The road has, in effect, been preserved in the administrative geography of the land rather than in any physical trace of the road itself.

According to Patrick Power, writing in 1908, this was once part of an ancient road connecting New Inn and the western country to Fethard, passing through a place referred to as Red City. The route as it can be partially reconstructed from the Ordnance Survey six-inch maps is not a straight line; it bends at right angles more than once, turning to the south-south-east, then east-north-east, then north-north-west, before meeting a narrow bohereen, a small rural lane, at another right angle. That bohereen, roughly three metres wide and defined by earthen field boundaries on either side, may itself be a surviving fragment of the older road. The western end of the alignment is still used as a dirt track, about 180 metres long, connected to a factory. Elsewhere, forestry saplings have been planted in a field to the north, with a buffer zone of around 20 metres maintained along the mid-section where the road runs. Within close range of the route sit two older features: a ringfort roughly 70 metres to the north-west, a type of enclosed farmstead common in early medieval Ireland, and a separate enclosure about 75 metres to the north, suggesting the road passed through a landscape that was already well settled long before anyone thought to map it.
