At Gowran Demesne in County Kilkenny, a set of cropmarks photographed in the summer of 1969 hint at something running across the flat ground near a tower house, possibly a fosse, possibly an old road, possibly neither, and the ambiguity is part of what makes the site worth thinking about.

A cropmark, for those unfamiliar with the technique, forms when buried ditches or filled features retain moisture differently from the surrounding soil, causing crops above them to grow taller or change colour in dry conditions. The aerial photograph taken on 9 July 1969 shows a fosse, a type of defensive or boundary ditch, running roughly north to south to the east of a tower house and approximately twenty metres east of a bawn. A bawn is the walled enclosure that typically surrounded an Irish tower house, used to protect livestock and provide a defended yard. The fosse appears to continue northward before disappearing into vegetation along the banks of a stream, roughly 130 metres north of the bawn, which raises the possibility that what looks like a ditch is actually an old watercourse rather than a man-made feature. A second, fainter cropmark runs parallel to the first, about six metres to the west, for around eighty metres east of the bawn. This subtler mark may indicate a trackway that once followed the line of the stream, a route defined not by construction but by regular passage alongside water. The site was initially catalogued as an enclosure in the late 1980s and 1990s before being reclassified as a road or trackway, a shift that reflects how interpretation of aerial evidence can evolve over time as more context accumulates.
