Road – togher, Cooleeny, Co. Tipperary

Beneath the surface of Derryville Bog in County Tipperary lies what amounts to a prehistoric road network, built not from stone or gravel but from branches, poles, and the accumulated timber of an Iron Age landscape.

The Cooleeny townland section of this bog contains no fewer than 44 toghers, a togher being a bog road or trackway constructed to allow movement across otherwise impassable wetland terrain. That so many should cluster within a single townland points to a community for whom this boggy ground was not a barrier but a regularly crossed thoroughfare.

A field survey carried out by Gowen in 1999 documented the range of construction methods in use across the site. Most of the toghers combined brushwood, the smaller, more flexible material, with roundwood poles, though six relied on roundwood alone and eight used only brushwood. One outlier, recorded as TN036-050095, incorporated gravel alongside brushwood, an unusual variation. Wood species were identified in seventeen of the toghers, and the range is striking: alder, ash, birch, blackthorn, hazel, mountain ash, and willow all appear, suggesting that builders drew on whatever timber was locally available rather than adhering to a single preferred material. Two of the toghers have been radiocarbon dated. Both fall within the Iron Age, with date ranges of 388 to 207 BC and 372 to 192 BC respectively, placing their construction in the centuries before the Roman period reached Britain, let alone Ireland. The people laying these paths through the bog were contemporaries of the La Tène culture spreading across continental Europe, though their immediate concern was considerably more practical: getting from one dry patch of ground to another.
