Twenty-nine of these structures, known as toghers, were identified within Killoran townland alone during field survey work, making this one of the more concentrated clusters of such features recorded in Irish bogland. A togher is essentially a causeway laid across soft or waterlogged ground, built from whatever timber was close to hand, allowing people and animals to cross terrain that would otherwise be impassable.

The construction methods varied across the site. Fifteen of the toghers were built entirely from brushwood, the simplest approach, while the remainder combined brushwood with roundwood in a more structured arrangement. Three examples showed evidence of pegs or stakes driven into the ground to hold the material in place. What makes the Killoran toghers particularly interesting is the range of wood species identified: alder, ash, birch, elm, hazel, holly, and mountain ash were all present across thirteen of the structures, with ash and hazel appearing most frequently, suggesting these were the most readily available or most favoured timbers in the locality. Radiocarbon dating carried out on one togher returned a date range of AD 1024 to 1162, placing it firmly in the early medieval period, though the remaining examples have not been dated individually and may span a broader timeframe. The concentration of routes across the bog implies sustained use of this landscape over generations, perhaps connecting settlements, farmland, or grazing areas that are otherwise difficult to trace above ground today.
