These are toghers, the Irish term for timber trackways laid across bogland to allow passage through otherwise impassable terrain, and Killoran townland contains an remarkable concentration of them. Field survey identified twenty-nine in total, including some probable examples, making this one of the more densely documented togher clusters in the county.

The construction methods varied across the group. Fifteen of the toghers were built entirely from brushwood, the simplest and most common approach, while the remainder combined brushwood with roundwood in more deliberate arrangements. Three showed evidence of pegs or stakes, suggesting a more secured or long-lasting design. Wood species identified across thirteen of the toghers included alder, ash, birch, elm, hazel, holly, and mountain ash, with ash and hazel occurring most frequently, likely reflecting what was locally available and considered suitably robust. One togher produced a radiocarbon date placing its construction somewhere between AD 1024 and 1162, firmly within the early medieval period, when Irish communities were moving regularly across landscapes that seasonal flooding and soft ground made treacherous for much of the year. That a single sample can anchor this whole buried network to a specific century gives some sense of how well the anaerobic bog environment seals organic material against decay. Wood that would rot within years in open air can survive for a millennium in peat.
