In the rough rocky pastureland above Coumeenoole Bay on the Dingle Peninsula, a working sheep-fold contains something considerably older than any farmer who has used it.

Built into one of seven drystone structures scattered across the hillside, the fold incorporates a circular building with walls roughly a metre thick, and beneath or within it, apparently, a souterrain: an underground passage or chamber, typically dry-laid from stone, that early medieval communities used for storage, refuge, or both. It is an unremarkable-looking fold from the outside. That is rather the point.

The site is known locally as Clochán na mBardán. The circular building, the best-preserved of the seven structures on the site, stands no higher than 1.5 metres and measures 3.6 metres in diameter, dimensions consistent with the small corbelled stone huts, known as clocháns, found elsewhere along this Atlantic-facing coastline. Robert Macalister noted the souterrain here as early as 1899. Of the remaining six structures, at least three have been identified as relatively recent sheep-shelters, but the others are ruinous enough that confident interpretation is difficult. They may have been early habitation sites; they may not. The archaeology of the western Dingle Peninsula is dense and layered, and this particular cluster sits within that broader landscape without fully giving itself away. J. Cuppage's 1986 survey of the Corca Dhuibhne area recorded the group and flagged its ambiguities, and those ambiguities remain.
