Stone Monuments

Standing stone, Shevry, Co. Tipperary

On the summit of a natural rise in Shevry, on the edge of a slope that drops away towards a valley below, a small limestone standing stone sits inside what may be an ancient pond barrow.

At just one metre tall and roughly trapezoidal in outline, it is not a dramatic monument by any measure, yet its position within this particular type of enclosure gives it a quiet strangeness. A pond barrow is a prehistoric funerary or ritual earthwork characterised by a central hollow or depression rather than the raised mound more commonly associated with burial monuments; the stone sits in the south-western part of that interior, aligned on a north-south axis, with a slight hollow worn around its base and no surviving packing-stones to show how it was originally set in place.

What makes the arrangement at Shevry more curious still is that this stone is not alone. A second standing stone stands nearby, positioned at the entrance to the barrow in the east-south-east quadrant, as though marking a threshold or point of passage. The relationship between the two stones and the enclosure they inhabit raises questions that the ground itself does not easily answer. The classification of the earthwork as a "possible" pond barrow reflects genuine uncertainty; these monuments are rare enough in Ireland that firm identification depends on careful survey, and the feature at Shevry has not been definitively confirmed. What can be said is that someone, at some point in prehistory, chose this elevated ground overlooking a valley and arranged limestone and earth in a way that still registers as deliberate.
