Stone row, Knocknafaugher, Co. Donegal

Hidden in the boglands of County Donegal, the Cloghbane stone row presents a striking alignment of five ancient stones that have stood sentinel for millennia.

The centrepiece of this prehistoric monument is an imposing standing stone measuring 1.5 metres high, 1.25 metres wide, and 0.65 metres thick, oriented along a north-northeast to south-southwest axis. This central megalith is flanked by its smaller companions; to the north stand two stones at 0.75 metres and 1.45 metres distance respectively, the first reaching 0.6 metres in height whilst the second rises only 0.4 metres above the bog.

To the south of the central stone, the alignment continues with two more modest markers, though these have largely succumbed to the encroaching peatland. The first sits just 0.5 metres away, its 0.25 metre square top barely breaking the surface of the present ground level, whilst another stone 0.65 metres further south has almost entirely disappeared beneath the bog. The site occupies a low-lying position overlooked by higher ground to the south, and the gradually rising bog levels suggest that additional stones may well lie concealed along the same alignment, waiting to tell more of this monument's story.

These stone rows, found across Ireland's Atlantic fringe, remain some of archaeology's most enigmatic monuments. Whilst their exact purpose continues to elude researchers, theories range from astronomical alignments to territorial markers or processional routes for ancient ceremonies. The Cloghbane example, marked clearly on Ordnance Survey 6-inch maps, forms part of County Donegal's rich prehistoric landscape, documented in the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal compiled by Brian Lacey and colleagues in 1983.
