Ringfort (Cashel), Breaghy, Ards, Co. Donegal

In the gently rolling landscape of Breaghy, near Parkmore in County Donegal, the remnants of an ancient cashel known as Cashelnagalliagh tell a quiet story of Ireland's medieval past.

What remains today is a collapsed stone wall that traces an arc from the east-northeast to the southwest section of the original circular fortification. The site occupies a modest rise in the undulating terrain, where exposed bedrock mingles with patches of pasture, creating the kind of defensive position favoured by early medieval communities.

The surviving wall sections reveal glimpses of the cashel's original construction, though much has been obscured by later additions. A modern field wall now sits atop the ancient foundations, but keen observers can still spot the outer face of the original stonework peeking through in places. The site appears on both the second and third editions of the Ordnance Survey 6-inch maps, where it's clearly marked as Cashelnagalliagh, preserving its Gaelic name which roughly translates to "stone fort of the standing stones" or "stone fort of the foreigners", depending on interpretation.

Today, modern field boundaries crisscross what would have been the interior of this defensive homestead, a common fate for many of Ireland's estimated 45,000 ringforts and cashels. These stone-built structures, typically dating from the early medieval period (roughly 500-1200 AD), served as fortified farmsteads for prosperous families. While Cashelnagalliagh may lack the dramatic preservation of more famous sites, its weathered stones offer an authentic connection to the everyday lives of Donegal's medieval inhabitants, who chose this rocky outcrop to build their home, farm their land, and weather the uncertainties of their age.
