Wicklow Head Lighthouse, Dunbur Head, Co. Wicklow

On the cliff edge at Wicklow Head stands a tapered granite tower that no longer earns its keep, its lamp long dark, yet its stonework still holding the shape it was given nearly two centuries ago.

Three stages of coursed granite rise in a slight taper toward a plain circular handrail at the cap, and inside, a spiral stair corbelled from stone (each step's edge projecting slightly beyond the one below to support the tread above) winds upward beside a wrought-iron rail. It is an unusually complete survivor, and that completeness is precisely what makes it worth pausing over.

The lighthouse was built around 1825, part of the broader effort in the early nineteenth century to mark Ireland's coastline for ships navigating the Irish Sea. What sets this particular tower apart is not any singular event tied to it, but its rarity as a category of building: County Wicklow has very few surviving structures from before the twentieth century that can be called industrial in character, and fewer still that remain in anything like their original form. Lighthouses of this vintage were functional first, built to do a job of work, coursed granite chosen for its endurance against salt air and cliff-edge weather rather than for display. That so much of it, the tapered shaft, the square-headed window and door openings, the internal stair, has come down to the present intact is what gives it its significance now.

Set right at the cliff edge, the building's position was of course dictated by the practical need for height and visibility over the sea, and that same position is what a visitor notices first on approach, the tower standing clear against sky and water with nothing to soften the drop below it.
