The site is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, a type of circular defended farmstead built predominantly during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. Thousands of them once dotted the Irish countryside, and a significant number survive, though rarely in conditions that make their original layout so legible.

What makes this particular example worth examining is the clarity of its surviving features. The interior measures some 31.5 metres in diameter, enclosed by a substantial earthen bank that remains largely intact. Around the outside of that bank runs a fosse, the wide defensive ditch that would originally have encircled the whole structure; it is still wide, still deep, and in places still waterlogged, which is itself a clue to how the landscape here retains moisture. The fosse has been filled in along its western and north-western arc, presumably at some point when the land was brought into agricultural or domestic use, and a modern building now sits against the outer face of the bank on the northern side. Despite these encroachments, the south-eastern portion of the site preserves something genuinely rare: the original entrance, marked by a deliberate break in the bank and a causeway that once carried people and livestock across the fosse and into the enclosed space beyond. That causeway is the kind of detail that turns an earthwork from an abstract shape into a place where daily life once moved through a specific point, in a specific direction.
