That casual intrusion tells you something about how these sites fare across centuries of agricultural use: not always demolished, not always celebrated, but quietly absorbed into the working landscape until the boundary between archaeology and farmyard becomes genuinely hard to read.

The earthwork is a rath, the most common monument type in the Irish countryside, built during the early medieval period roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries as a farmstead enclosure for a family of some local standing. This example is roughly circular, measuring about 28 metres across, and defined by an earthen bank that still stands to an internal height of around 1.4 metres on its south-east to north-west arc. Where the bank gives way to a natural scarp on the north-west to north-east side, the ground itself does the work of enclosure. Beyond the bank, a fosse, essentially a defensive or drainage ditch dug to reinforce the earthwork, survives to a depth of around 0.8 metres along the southern stretch, though a mountain stream now flows through part of it, blurring its original line. The entrance, a four-metre gap in the bank to the south-south-west, is where the farm trackway enters, crossing the interior and connecting to a levelled section of bank on the eastern side. The interior slopes down towards the north-east and has been used over time as a dump for field clearance stone, the kind of gradual accumulation that both obscures and, in its way, preserves what lies beneath.
