Ringfort (Rath), Dunmarklun, Co. Cork

On a north-facing slope in Dunmarklun, County Cork, a shallow circular depression roughly twenty-six metres across is the only surface trace of what was once a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort.

These earthwork enclosures, typically consisting of a raised bank and outer ditch, were the most common form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, used as enclosed farmsteads by farming families between roughly the fifth and twelfth centuries. This one has been levelled, most likely by generations of agricultural work, leaving nothing upstanding to signal its age or purpose to anyone crossing the field.

What makes this site quietly legible, despite its erasure, is the 1842 Ordnance Survey six-inch map, which recorded the enclosure as a hachured circle of approximately twenty-five metres in diameter. The hachured symbol, a cartographic convention used by the early OS to indicate a circular earthwork, appears on that map at a time when the feature was presumably still visible as a raised bank. The ground today tells a slightly different story: the depression measured at around twenty-six metres, a metre wider than the mapped enclosure, which may reflect how the bank material has spread and settled into the surrounding pasture over the intervening decades. The site sits just below the crest of the hill, a position typical of ringforts, which were often placed to take advantage of natural elevation without being fully exposed on the summit.
