Ringfort (Rath), Lissian, Co. Roscommon

What is immediately striking about this particular ringfort in Lissian is not what survives but what has quietly disappeared.

A ringfort, or rath, is an enclosed farmstead of the early medieval period, typically defended by one or more earthen banks and ditches, and thousands of them survive across Ireland in varying degrees of preservation. This one, sitting on the crest of the western end of an east-west ridge spur, retains just enough of its original form to be legible in the landscape. The circular grass-covered interior measures roughly 33.4 metres across, and the earthen bank that once defined it still stands, though barely, rising no more than half a metre above the interior ground level. Beyond that inner bank lies a fosse, a flat-bottomed ditch, and beyond that the partial remains of an outer bank, which survives only along the south-south-west to north-west arc and at the north-east. The whole enclosure, outer bank included, originally extended to around 52 metres across.

The site has not come through the centuries unaltered. The interior on its western side and the inner bank running from north-west to north-east show evidence of quarrying, to a depth of around 30 centimetres, suggesting the earthwork was treated at some point as a convenient source of material rather than as something worth preserving. There is no visible entrance remaining anywhere on the circuit. What gives this rath its particular interest, though, is its company. The same ridge spur carries two further raths: one approximately 350 metres to the west-north-west, the other roughly 250 metres to the east-south-east. Three enclosures aligned along a single elevated spine of land, each within easy sight of the others, suggest a settlement pattern rather than an isolated farmstead, though what relationship the occupants may have had to one another is now impossible to say.
