Ringfort (Rath), Loughglinn Demesne, Co. Roscommon

Deep in the deciduous woodland of Loughglinn Demesne in County Roscommon, there survives what may easily be mistaken for a natural rise in the ground: a low, curving earthen bank, no more than half a metre or so above the interior surface, tracing a gentle arc through the trees.

This is all that remains of a ringfort, the type of enclosed circular settlement built in early medieval Ireland, typically as a farmstead surrounded by a raised earthen boundary. What makes this particular example quietly unusual is not what survives, but what it was called. The 1914 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map labels it in gothic lettering as "Lisheen", a diminutive of the Irish word lios, itself a common term for a ringfort. The little lios, then; a name that carries its own gentle acknowledgement of modesty.

By 1914, the feature was already reduced to an arc of bank running roughly west to north, circumscribing what would have been a circuit of approximately 35 metres. The bank itself is slight, measuring around two metres in width, with an external height of 0.6 metres and an internal height of 0.5 metres. It sits on a gentle north-facing slope, now within woodland that would have looked very different when the site was in use. That it appears on no earlier edition of the Ordnance Survey maps suggests it was either overlooked by earlier surveyors or had already blended so thoroughly into the landscape by the nineteenth century that only the 1914 revision caught it, and even then only partially.
