Ringfort (Rath), Monataggart, Co. Cork

A silage pit now occupies part of what was once a defended farmstead, which says something useful about the relationship between Irish agriculture and the ancient landscape it keeps absorbing.

The ringfort at Monataggart in mid Cork sits in pasture, its circular outline still legible on Ordnance Survey maps stretching back to 1842, though the ground itself tells a more complicated story.

A ringfort, or rath, is the most common type of early medieval monument in Ireland, typically a circular enclosure defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, used as a farmstead and enclosure for livestock roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. The Monataggart example is a modest one, around 35 metres in diameter, with a single rampart. When P. J. Hartnett noted it in 1939, the bank measured approximately 100 feet across, already eroded along its western and north-western sides, with trees planted in the interior. The condition recorded then has continued to deteriorate in the decades since. Only a short section of the original bank now survives on the eastern side, and at some point a landowner rebuilt part of the southern arc, an act that complicates whatever archaeological reading the earthwork might otherwise offer. Reconstruction with good intentions can obscure the very features that help date and interpret a site, blurring the line between what is genuinely early medieval and what is a later approximation of it.
